Old Key West Resort
Our Disney Vacation Club home resort is ‘Old Key West’ (OKW). You can find out more about DVC and why we picked ‘Old Key West’ here.
The first ‘Disney Vacation Club Resort’, as it was originally named, opened on the 20th December 1991. With an initial purchase price of $51 per point and a minimum 230 point purchase, the first DVC Members would pay a minimum of $11,730 to join.
In January 2021 we paid $180 per point and now in June 2023 it is $205 per point. So the same 230 point contract purchased today would cost you $47,150
The ‘Old Key West’ resort has a relaxed Floridian feel. All of the buildings are two storey’s and have 6 villas each. There is lots of local flora and fauna so watch where you step at night so not to squash a lizard!
The only transportation option to the parks from OKW are buses. There are multiple bus stops around the sprawling resort and you may find that a bus is already full before it gets to your stop. The resort is in the ‘Disney Springs’ area of Walt Disney World and this can be accessed by boat from the Hospitality House area. These boats run frequently and are a relaxing way to see the resort as a whole and unwind after a busy park day.
There are roughly 760 different rooms across 58 buildings including, deluxe studio’s, one bedrooms villas, one bedroom lock off’s, 2 bedrooms villas and grand villas.
The resort is split into multiple sections, Hospitality House, Millers Road, Peninsula Road, Old Turtle Pond Road and South Point Road.
Each DVC member who has OKW as their home resort has a favourite section to stay in.
Each section has a bus stop, a small pool and laundry facilities.
Hospitality House:
This is the location of Guest Services, Bell services, the Conch Flats General Store, Olivia’s restaurant, Gurgling suitcase bar and Good’s Food to Go. This is where you will also find the recreation area, sports facilities and the main resort pool.
Rooms in the Hospitality House area are the first to be booked at the 11 month window.
A night in a deluxe studio is on average 10 point per night during the week and 14 points at weekends.
The Gurgling suitcase is where Phillip discovered his favourite cocktail on property, the Smoked Turkey.
Millers Road, Peninsula Road, Old Turtle Pond Road and South Point Road:
These areas are the same price per point as those near Hospitality House, however they do not have as many amenities. They are popular for their peace and quiet. Some buildings have beautiful views over the lakes. When we stayed on South Point Road in building 56 our balcony had a view of the small pool. In an evening we were able to use the hot tub and not see another person.
Even though OKW is our home resort we have only stayed a total of 3 nights. When we book our Disney trips we book our entire time at OKW 11 months before so that we have a guaranteed place to stay.
For our June 2023 trip we are staying at OKW for 2 nights before our cruise and then had originally booked our post cruise stay also at OKW. When we reached our 7 month window we checked the DVC website to see whether any other resorts had availability, and we were able to call member services to changed to Bay Lake Tower.
Swapping resorts at the 7 month point is common. The joy of the 11 month booking window means you will still have a fantastic place to stay if you can’t change resorts.
The main downside to staying at OKW is that there are only buses to the parks. You need to be much more prepared for a longer journey and potential wait for a bus. However we are still very happy to call Old Key West our home.
