Animal Kingdom Lodge
Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL) is split into two sections, Jambo House and Kidani Village. These sections are separated by a savanna. Yep that’s right you can see over 30 different species of animal roaming around right from your balcony. We were fortunate to have stayed in a deluxe studio with savanna room in June 2022 and it was wonderful to sit on the balcony with a coffee and watch the zebras and giraffes.
The Jambo house lobby is gorgeous, the giant windows look out onto the savanna and there are outside viewing areas with binoculars and descriptions of all the animals.
There is the large collection of African art, and as international cast members return to Walt Disney World you can find African artists and musicians in the lobby sharing their skills with guests.
The Kidani Village section is smaller and offers less dining options. It is worth noting that the two sections of this resort are not linked and you need to walk outside to get between the two or hop on the resort shuttle bus.
Both sections are home to DVC rooms as well as standard hotel rooms. This resort offers the cheapest DVC room at 7 points per night for the hotel standard view. As you can imagine these rooms book up quickly but there are also deluxe studios, 1 & 2 bedroom villas and grand villas as well as Club level rooms (concierge). At the moment Disney is not directly selling Animal Kingdom Lodge, but it has been sold at $210 per point direct in the past.
AKL was opened in 2001, 3 years after Animal Kingdom park opened. The design was led by imagineer Joe Rohde, the same man to head up the design of Animal Kingdom. The detail is incredible When we visited in June 2022 they were in the process of replacing the thatch roof’s, these are all laid in the traditional manor and help to create an authentic feel to the resort.
As AKL is the most “remote” resort there are no issues with noise from the other parks or main roads. You really fell like you are on an African safari resort.
The main downfall of this resort is the transport options. Even though it is in the Animal Kingdom park area there is no walking path. The only option for transportation to the parks is by bus.
AKL is built in the traditional African kraal, the horseshoe-curved design offers the most views of the savanna’s. However this does mean this resort has the longest corridors of any resort.
There are 4 different view options when staying at AKL (points based on a weeknight in June 2023):
Value - 9 points (hotel style room or parking lot view)
Standard - 14 points (pool view)
Savanna view - 17 points
Club level - 22 points.
Club levels offers a separate lounge with complimentary buffet style dining options. These rooms are extremely popular as you can save money on meals by eating at the lounge.
The dining options at AKL are mainly found in the Jambo House section. Here you can find ‘Boma’ and ‘Jiko’ both incredibly popular restaurants and the only quick service on property ‘The Mara’.
As we were staying in the Kidani Village section the only dining options available to us was ‘Sanaa’ a table service restaurant, and ‘The Maji Pool bar’ which offered a limited quick service menu. This meant that if we wanted a quick bite or to refill our resort mugs we had to walk outside to Jambo house.
We have only eaten at ‘Sanaa’ for lunch and were able to be seated by the window to watch the animals on the savanna. The bread service is as tasty as everyone says and definitely enough to split between 2 or 3 people.
All the restaurants serve African inspired food so may not be suitable for the less adventurous diner.
AKL is incredible and many DVC members stay here for non park trips. Having a savanna onsite is something not seen at any other resort outside of Africa and if you can is definitely worth a visit. Just remember that the only transport option is Disney buses and if you are staying at another resort you will need to travel to Disney Springs and then change bus to AKL. Make sure you give yourself plenty of travel time to and from any dining reservations, we almost missed our ‘Sanaa’ reservation.
We found the disparity between the two section when it came to dining very frustrating. Although Kidani village was quiet and beautiful I don’t think we would ever stay at AKL again, but if we did we would make sure it was in Jambo House.
